An open or weakly protected WiFi network can slow your connection and expose devices. These steps take about ten minutes.

Change the default admin password

Log into the router admin page and replace the factory password. Do not leave “admin/admin” style defaults.

Use WPA2 or WPA3 with a long passphrase

Avoid WEP. Use a unique passphrase you do not reuse on other sites.

Create a guest network

Put visitors and IoT gadgets on a guest SSID so they cannot reach your work laptop or NAS.

Update firmware when available

Router updates often include security fixes. Check the manufacturer app or admin page every few months.
